Was this a recent acquisition at the Bancroft? and you are correct in questioning whether something bad could have happened. So many horrible things happened as a result of the inquisition, not only in Mexico but throughout the world.
If you by chance live in Northern California you might want to consider joining the Northern California Ranchos Genealogy group. We meet quarterly somewhere in Northern California but mostly in the Sacramento area as the group coordinator and many of it's members live in that area. A few of us commute to those very lively meetings that are growing in numbers. In January we met at the Bancroft Library in Berkely and were given a warm welcome and presentation by the Latin American Curator and some of the staff. It was more of a how to do research at the Bancroft and what types of collections are available for Latin America and how to access the catalog information.
I have since returned to work full time and therefore will not have the time to do research at the Bancroft in the near future.
You may contact me off line if you are interested in joining this group. Our next meeting is on June 24th which I will not be attending because it's my husband's birthday. Thank you, Alicia. I am sort of new to genealogy. I have done a lot of
snooping around on the internet with google searches and such. I plan on taking
a trip to UCBerkeley in three weeks. They purchased Mexico's documents from
the Mexican Inquisition. There are over sixty different docs. There is one
on the Flores de la Torre family's genealogy from the the town of Juchipila.
It was requested by two Flores de la Torre family members. I wonder if
there was something bad that came of it Because I have discovered the Flores
family descended from conversos from Sevilla ( sometime around siglo XIV or
siglo XV).
It was considered an incredible acquisition for the Bancroft Library. I
cant wait to learn more.

Bancroft Collection
You can access the 61 volumes of the Mexican Inquisition that the Bancroft
Library purchased at

They give a description of the acquisition, as well.
It just so happens that it contains a 360 page volume on my surname in the
town that my family is from(Juchipila). My g-g gfather was a rich and
prominent man there circa 1850. The family in this doc were descendants of the
forst encomendero of Juchipila. I traced about nine generations to about the mid
17th century. Their paternal line actually goes back to 1300 A.D. to Ferrer
de Fuentes. My main goal is to bridge a 150 year gap ( if it does connect).
Anyhow, I hope that many of us can get useful info here.
