Hello Everyone, I have just recently started researching my ancestry. So happy to find this site so specific to the area I'm researching. I have been trying to move passed my gr gr grandfather Tomas Valdes, b. 1835 in "Jerez, y vecino de los Cuervos" according to his marriage documents. Also, according to the marriage documents he was "hijo ligitimo de Jose Maria Valdes y Estefana Muro". However, on his first child's baptism record his father is listed as Teodoro Valdes and Maria Varela. Later baptism records for his children show Jose Maria as his father again. I have not been able to find any birth or baptism records on Tomas Valdes to confirm who his father was. Have looked in Family Search's records but no success. I would appreciate any help in this search!

I took a quick look in Family Search, and did not find much, either. I found no references to Jerez, but I also noted in the FHL card catalog there are gaps in the church records. This could account for the missing info. The Jerez records are online.

I did note, however, some records for the families Valdes-Muro and Valdes-Varela in Tepetongo, a town not too far from Jerez. Films for this town are online.

Have you verified the marriage info with the matrimonial investigation? This may clear up the apparent discrepancy.

Could there be two Tomas Valdes's?

If you have the IGI batch numbers, you can search the IGI with less information (just a father's last name, for example). This is for the old Family Search site, and not the new one. Some are available at http://mexicoigibatchnumbers.wetpaint.com/ If your local Family History Library still has the "Parish and Vital Records List" (or index) microfiche, it will have a more complete list. Get the most recent copy available (this might be the July 1998 edition).

A few of the batch numbers for baptisms are:

Jerez
1780-1800 J600805 and K600805
1806-1874 J600806 and K600806
1820-1828 C600807
1836-1840 C600808
1867-1869 J600809 and K600809

Tepetongo
1818-31 C600833
1831-42 C600834
1842-50 J600835 and K600835

The C numbers have both boy's and girl's baptisms; J's are boys only, K's are girls only.

You can also search for marriages this way; the batches are M numbers. The two references will have these also.

Search the old Family Search site, as well as the new. The search engines work differently, and depending on what you start with, you may get different results (this is also true for the beta site; search this one also).

I have Valdés and Muro in my family tree, and what I can tell you is that even when some records appear in Jerez they may come from places sorrounding, it is because in ancient times not all the towns had a parrish, so the people had to go to the next parrish for baptism or marriage. The last name Valdés is pretty common in the area as well as Muro, and you can find two different person with the same name, in this case Tomas Valdés.
I recomend you to find brothers of Tomas, then you may find more information about their parents.
Can you give me the link in wich films can be seen online?

Thank you Chema for your help. I can't move on to find any brothers or sisters until I know who his parents are. I wouldn't be able to confirm without knowing who his father or mother were. I have been able to find very little on a Tomas Valdes for the dates and town I'm researching.

I don't have Tomas Valdez in my research but I do have Jose Maria and Estefana
Muro with 2 daughters, Juliana and Maria Jesus.  My records are on Rootsweb.com
and my file name is Mexico.  I will be updating the records in a week or so. If
Tomas is there son then I need to change their approximate dates of birth. Can
you tell me the film number for the marriage record for Tomas?
